- Spherical single lenses made of zinc selen (ZnSe, or zinc selenide), the most commonly used optical material that transmits infrared light.
- In contrast to other optical materials for infrared wavelengths such as Ge (germanium) or Si (silicon), ZnSe lenses transmit some visible light, facilitating optical axis adjustment (alignment) of infrared laser systems and permitting use of cheaper He-Ne lasers.
- Lenses intended for use with CO2 lasers have AR coatings.
- In contrast to other salt-based infrared materials, the lenses are non-hygroscopic and extremely stable under typical conditions.
